Moscow/Kyiv – The war in Ukraine is creating a dangerous ripple effect, spreading from its primary theater into new arenas of conflict, including global shipping and direct superpower diplomacy.
The first ripple is the expansion into maritime commerce. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of using its oil tanker fleet for military intelligence and sabotage, turning a civilian industry into a potential conflict zone.
The second ripple is the escalating tension between Moscow and Washington. Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that the U.S. supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine would trigger a “qualitatively new stage of escalation” and destroy their relationship.
These developments are occurring as the core conflict on land intensifies. Putin claims his forces have captured nearly 5,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory this year, giving Moscow the “complete strategic initiative.”
This outward spread of the conflict poses a growing threat to global stability. With each new arena that becomes a front, the risks of miscalculation and a wider war increase dramatically.
