A Canadian ad quoting Ronald Reagan on the dangers of tariffs has led to a full-scale collapse of trade talks between the US and Canada.
President Donald Trump announced the “termination” of all negotiations on truth social. He called the ad “fake” and “fraudulent.”
The ad, from Ontario, was a protest against 35% US tariffs. It used Reagan’s 1987 warning that “trade barriers hurt every American worker.”
The ad has also been disavowed by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. They stated the “selective audio” “misrepresents” the full speech and was used without permission.
The suspension of talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, now leaves Canadian pm mark carney in a lurch as he tries to salvage the c$3.6 billion daily trade relationship.
