Japan’s Defense Ministry is set to introduce a new procurement system aimed at integrating advanced technologies from startups into its defense equipment, according to Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi. Announced on Friday, the initiative is intended to boost startup participation in the defense sector by providing upfront funding for technology development.
The program will focus on innovations in areas such as drones and artificial intelligence, seeking to enhance capabilities for modern warfare. In its initial phase, the ministry will solicit proposals for cost-effective, mass-producible small attack drones and related equipment for the Ground Self-Defense Force and Maritime Self-Defense Force, with an emphasis on using domestically produced components.
The selection process will start with multiple promising companies at the concept stage. These candidates will be gradually narrowed down through prototype development and testing phases. The ministry’s approach aims to accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge technologies while strengthening Japan’s defense capabilities.
In addition to combat-focused technologies, the ministry is interested in solutions for improving warehouse management, reducing staffing needs, and equipment that lowers aircraft noise and enhances working conditions for Air Self-Defense Force personnel.
Applications for the initial round of proposals will open on October 2. The Defense Ministry anticipates that this new system will facilitate the rapid integration of innovative technologies into Japan’s defense framework.
