Takaichi expressed Japan’s commitment to forming a “strong and prosperous cooperative relationship” with the Solomon Islands, based on mutual principles such as democracy, freedom, human rights, and the rule of law. Wale, in turn, appreciated Japan’s support, emphasizing the urgent need for development assistance faced by Pacific island nations.
This meeting takes place against the backdrop of a notable policy shift in the Solomon Islands. Previously, in 2019, the Solomon Islands switched its diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to China, followed by a 2022 security agreement with Beijing. This agreement allowed Chinese naval vessels access to Solomon Islands ports and enabled Chinese security personnel to operate within its borders, raising concerns among regional allies over China’s expanding influence in the Pacific region. However, since assuming office in May 2026, Prime Minister Wale has indicated a new foreign policy direction, signaling a review of the security pact with China, criticizing China’s recent submarine-launched ballistic missile test in the Pacific, and prioritizing diplomatic engagements with Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Japan.
