Russia has formally lodged a protest against Japan’s decision to deploy U.S.-made Typhon medium-range missile systems on the island of Kyushu, citing concerns that the move threatens regional security. The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a protest note earlier in the month, warning that the missile deployment could destabilize peace in the region.
Moscow’s protest also included a demand for Tokyo to dismantle the systems. Russia emphasized the seriousness of its concerns, urging Japan to reconsider its decision. The issue was also brought up by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko during discussions with Japanese Ambassador Akira Muto in Moscow.
This development comes in the context of ongoing tensions between Russia and Japan, notably a territorial dispute over the southern Kuril Islands. The islands, controlled by Russia but claimed by Japan, have been a point of contention that has hindered the countries from signing a formal peace treaty following World War II.
