Vietnam and Japan have committed to strengthening their defense collaboration, focusing on several strategic domains such as military training, cybersecurity, development of the defense industry, United Nations peacekeeping efforts, and post-war recovery initiatives. This agreement was reached during a meeting in Hanoi between Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Phan Văn Giang and General Uchikura Hiroaki, Chief of Staff of Japan’s Self-Defence Forces.

The discussions centered on enhancing bilateral defense relations and effectively implementing current cooperation agreements. General Giang stressed Vietnam’s dedication to boosting consultation and dialogue mechanisms, expanding military branch cooperation, and fostering collaboration in defense technology, military medicine, and cybersecurity. He pointed out that these defense relations have become a crucial component of the broader Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and Japan.

The Vietnamese minister acknowledged Japan’s support in various areas, including personnel training, defense industry development, technology transfer, and post-war recovery efforts. He also advocated for increased scholarship and training opportunities for Vietnamese defense personnel, particularly in the fields of science, engineering, and technology.

Japan is recognized as one of Vietnam’s key economic and strategic partners, with robust cooperation extending across trade, investment, development assistance, and labor exchanges. Defense collaboration has notably expanded, facilitated by regular policy dialogues and military consultations. General Uchikura reiterated Japan’s commitment to deepening defense ties with Vietnam and expressed support for broadening cooperation in high-level exchanges, military education, cybersecurity, and healthcare services within the armed forces.

Both nations agreed to maintain close coordination to further enhance mutual trust, regional stability, and long-term strategic cooperation. This ongoing partnership aims to bolster regional security and foster a stable environment conducive to the development of both countries.
