Japan has unveiled a revised national artificial intelligence (AI) strategy, aiming to bolster national security, enhance domestic AI capabilities, and decrease dependency on overseas technology providers. This updated policy, approved on July 14, underscores the swift evolution of AI technology and rising cybersecurity concerns, coming just half a year after the initial strategy was launched.
In light of increasingly advanced AI models that have heightened the sophistication and ease of executing cyber threats, the Japanese government plans to reassess current AI-related laws and systems. Additionally, the strategy emphasizes strengthening international cooperation to tackle new security challenges. A significant aim is to achieve greater “AI sovereignty,” empowering Japan to develop and manage AI technologies within its borders.
The revised plan introduces the AI Transformation (AX) initiative, which seeks to integrate AI into various facets such as decision-making processes, industry practices, and workforce development. Japan is set to focus on investing in vertical AI, targeting sectors like healthcare and manufacturing, as well as in physical AI, encompassing robotics and autonomous driving technologies.
As part of its long-term strategy for economic growth, Japan is targeting an influx of 23.1 trillion yen in combined public and private investment for vertical AI by the fiscal year 2040. Concurrently, the nation aims to secure 10.5 trillion yen for advancements in physical AI. These strategic efforts reflect Japan’s commitment to establishing itself as a leader in AI innovation while ensuring its technological independence and security.
