A Japanese trade delegation led by former Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya has visited China in an effort to sustain dialogue amidst deteriorating bilateral relations. The delegation, comprising around 50 members including Japanese business executives, aims to engage with senior Chinese officials during the visit.
Iwaya emphasized the significance of maintaining dialogue at a time when relations between Japan and China are strained, primarily due to security issues. Tensions have escalated following comments by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Japan’s potential response to a Chinese attack on Taiwan. Iwaya expressed his willingness to exchange views with Chinese leaders if the opportunity arises.
The visit by the Japanese delegation takes place shortly after a summit in Washington between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump, where discussions focused on trade, artificial intelligence, and other bilateral issues.
This delegation’s visit had been previously delayed following the death of former Foreign Minister Yohei Kono, who had been leading the trade promotion organization. The visit underscores Japan’s continued interest in fostering communication with China despite current diplomatic challenges.
