Oncologists point to daily habits like smoking, poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, alcohol use, inadequate sleep, and prolonged sitting as critical factors that can substantially increase long-term cancer risk. Tobacco use remains the top preventable cause of cancer globally, with its links extending beyond lung cancer to include cancers of the mouth, throat, bladder, kidney, pancreas, and oesophagus. Additionally, even non-smokers are at risk due to passive smoking. Quitting smoking can lead to a rapid reduction in cancer risk, highlighting its importance in cancer prevention.

Obesity is another major concern, linked to various cancers such as breast, colon, kidney, endometrial, and oesophageal cancers. Excess body fat can lead to inflammation and hormone changes conducive to tumor growth. Conversely, regular physical activity is recommended to help lower cancer risk. High consumption of red meat is similarly linked to higher bowel cancer risk. Alcohol consumption is another factor, with even moderate drinking potentially increasing the risk of breast, liver, and colorectal cancers. On the positive side, diets rich in fiber, vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, and whole foods may help reduce cancer risk. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, kale, and cabbage contain compounds believed to support the body’s natural defense mechanisms.

Lesser-known risk factors highlighted by doctors include excessive sun exposure, tanning beds, poor sleep, disrupted sleep cycles, long-term night-shift work, and exposure to harmful substances like radon gas. Health professionals underscore that preventing cancer does not require drastic changes overnight. Instead, they recommend small but consistent lifestyle improvements, such as quitting smoking, reducing processed foods and alcohol, maintaining physical activity, protecting the skin from sun exposure, and ensuring adequate sleep, as effective measures to significantly lower long-term cancer risk.

Regular health screenings and medical check-ups are also considered crucial for early detection and prevention. By maintaining awareness and making informed choices, individuals can play an active role in reducing their cancer risk and promoting long-term health.
