Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have committed to enhancing their countries’ collaboration in security, economic resilience, and cutting-edge technologies. This decision emerged from a recent summit held in New Delhi, where both leaders emphasized their dedication to maintaining a free and rules-based Indo-Pacific region. They expressed shared concerns regarding economic coercion and the ongoing developments in the East China Sea and South China Sea.
The two nations aim to fortify their supply chains, focusing on strategic sectors such as semiconductors and critical minerals. This partnership will further include an expansion of joint military exercises, improved cooperation on naval vessel maintenance, and the development of defense equipment. To solidify these efforts, they plan to convene a “two-plus-two” meeting involving foreign and defense ministers from both countries later this year.
On the economic front, Japanese and Indian businesses have signed 129 memorandums of understanding, which represent investments totaling approximately ¥2 trillion ($12.4 billion). These agreements cover a range of sectors, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, automotive manufacturing, and advanced technologies. This significant investment underscores the growing economic ties between the two nations.
Additionally, Japan and India have agreed to increase their cooperation in artificial intelligence. A key aspect of this initiative is the plan to bring 500 Indian AI specialists to Japan by the year 2030. This move aims to bolster joint research and innovation, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing collaboration in emerging technological fields.
