Japan is contemplating the imposition of additional sanctions against Russia in response to its ongoing military actions in Ukraine. The Japanese government is reportedly focusing on measures aimed at vessels associated with Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, which are involved in the transportation of energy resources.
The proposed sanctions are designed to disrupt Russia’s energy trade, potentially impacting oil shipments to key Asian markets. This move could further isolate Russia economically, as Japan considers expanding the list of goods subject to export restrictions and tightening existing controls.
The deliberations take place against a backdrop of increasingly strained relations between Japan and Russia. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has previously expressed criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Etorofu Island, part of the disputed Northern Territories that both countries claim.
Japan has emphasized the importance of coordinating its sanctions with other nations and supporting international efforts concerning the conflict in Ukraine. This coordinated approach is seen as vital to exerting pressure on Russia while maintaining solidarity with the international community.
