South Korea and Japan are exploring the possibility of establishing a military logistics support agreement, as revealed by South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back. This development follows discussions with Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi during a regional security forum in Singapore. The proposed agreement, known as acquisition and cross-servicing, would allow both nations to share and obtain military supplies like fuel, food, and ammunition for joint operations and activities.
Minister Ahn stressed the political sensitivity of the matter, underlining the need for public understanding and support from both countries before moving forward. He expressed South Korea’s intention to handle the issue with caution, acknowledging the historical tensions that linger from Japan’s colonial rule over the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945. In addition to the logistics agreement, the defense ministers agreed to consider conducting a joint humanitarian search-and-rescue exercise, potentially taking place in June.
