China has taken action against 20 Japanese entities by placing them on its export control list for dual-use items, thereby restricting Chinese companies from providing these items without obtaining prior approval. According to China’s Commerce Ministry, the aim is to curb what it sees as Japan’s expanding military ambitions, as well as concerns over potential nuclear-related activities. The restrictions encompass goods, software, and technology that can serve both civilian and military purposes.
The affected organizations include Japan’s National Institute for Defense Studies and several subsidiaries associated with major defense companies like Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Electric, and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. Japan has condemned the decision, labeling the measures as unacceptable and calling on China to revoke the restrictions. Japanese officials warn that this could have adverse effects on the economic and trade relations between the two nations.
Relations between China and Japan have been on a downward trend in recent months, primarily due to security issues. These include Japan’s plans to enhance its defense capabilities and discussions related to Taiwan, which have contributed to the growing strain.
