Japanese Firms Bolster India’s Semiconductor Industry Through Partnerships and Training

by admin477351

Japanese semiconductor-related companies are increasingly establishing their presence in India as the country seeks to build a robust domestic chip manufacturing ecosystem. This development was highlighted during Semicon India 2026 in New Delhi, where over 30 Japanese firms participated in discussions with Indian industry representatives on various topics, including investment, technology partnerships, supply chains, and research and development.

India is positioning itself as a future global hub for the semiconductor industry, focusing on areas such as chip materials, design, manufacturing, packaging, and testing. The Indian government is actively promoting the development of domestic semiconductor capabilities and is working to cultivate a skilled workforce in this sector.

Several Japanese firms are already forming strategic partnerships with Indian companies. Fujifilm has teamed up with Tata Electronics to work on advanced semiconductor materials. Sumitomo Chemical is exploring collaboration on semiconductor material supply chains, while Enomoto is anticipated to offer production technology support. Additionally, Tokyo Electron plans to establish a training center in Gujarat by 2027 to aid in developing engineers specializing in semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

Despite India’s vast pool of engineering talent, industry officials acknowledge a shortage of workers with specialized semiconductor skills. The involvement of Japanese companies is expected to facilitate technology transfer and workforce development, thereby strengthening India’s semiconductor supply chain.
